ARLINGTON, VA - Seven Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) students have been selected as semifinalists in the 46th Annual National Achievement Scholarship Program (NASP).
The NASP is conducted each year by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The program recognizes and provides scholarships to academically promising African-American students throughout the United States and in DoDEA schools across the world. To date, over 29,500 African-American high school students have received achievement scholarship awards estimated at $94 million.
DoDEA’s seven semifinalists are among 1,600 other semifinalists from across the nation. Students chose to compete in the 2010 Semi-Annual finals when they took the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
The DoDEA semifinalists are:
- Christian D. Randolph – Kaiserslautern HS
- Derrick B. Lewis – Ramstein HS
- Sophia Seawell – Ramstein HS
- Vanessa B. Whatley – Wiesbaden HS
- Kaylie D. McGregor – Naples HS
- Jay R. Pothula – Nile C. Kinnick HS
- Christopher P. Campbell – Seoul American HS
All of the semifinalists will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 800 ‘Achievement Scholarship’ awards, worth $2.6 million.
Approximately 1,300 semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level. Finalists will be selected based on high academic performance throughout their high school career; recommendations by the school’s principal; a written essay; and SAT scores that reflect PSAT/NMSQT performance. The semifinalist and a high school official must also provide information about the student’s participation in school and community activities; leadership abilities; and educational goals.
Achievement Scholarship Awards will be awarded in the spring of 2010.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, Guam, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
