TORII STATION, Okinawa, Japan -- The Pacific Area Office regrets to announce the death of former Japan District Superintendent Richard F. Osner, who retired from the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in 1999. Mr. Osner died from a massive stroke after falling on November 10th. He had more than 43 years of government service and was a veteran of the US Navy in World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded when the USS Yorktown was bombed.

As a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent, he inspired numerous administrators and teachers to enhance educational leadership and provide quality instruction throughout DoDEA. “His legacy will live on as he was instrumental in the development and the creation of the Far East Junior Science Humanities Symposium held in Tsukuba City. This year will mark the 25th year students will participate in this unique and important program. Oz was a true pioneer in the area of education and served as a mentor to many new administrators in Japan. His wonderful disposition and his ability to manage complex issues under duress was the foundation of his success in the Pacific,” said Bruce Derr, Superintendent for Japan.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to Yasuko Osner and her children. Dick’s dedication and commitment to our students and schools along with his ability to create long lasting partnerships with our host nation was inspirational. We are saddened by his loss,” said Dr. Nancy Bresell, Director, DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam.
