On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, January 27-29, 2004, approximately
250 students from the Department of Defense schools, Japanese
prefectural and international high schools will participate
the first Model United Nations event to be held at the United
Nations University Centre in Tokyo, Japan. The university
is located at 53-70 Jingu-mae, 5-chome, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo,
and was established in 1969 to promote international scholarly
cooperation. Its mission is to resolve the pressing global
concerns that are the concerns of the United Nations and
its member states.
The event will open with a reception that includes embassy cultural attachés.
Conference sessions will start at 0900 and finish at 1700 each day. During the
three-day event, students will role play diplomats from various countries as
they simulate the United Nations committee meetings, discuss and try to find
solutions to world issues. They will participate in such groups as the United
Nations General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, and Security Council.
Some students will be representatives on the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural
Committee or the Legal Committee. Lobbyists will be involved in one of ten non-governmental
organization coalitions such as the Women’s World Summit Foundation and
Indigenous Peoples Biodiversity Network. Students will serve as delegates, pages,
reporters and translators at this year’s MUN Conference. This year’s
theme is “Working Towards a Brighter Future.” The MUN simulation
helps make students aware of world issues and differing points of view. Their
efforts will result in a deeper understanding through dialogue and discussion
of world issues.
