Training of Model United Nations
Sponsors Planned Kadena High School, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa,
Japan, is the first recipient of the Model United Nations Global
Leadership Opportunity (MUNGLO) Award funded by a grant received
from the Goldman-Sachs Foundation to spread Model United Nations
around the globe. The grant supports the work of the United Nations
and encourages active civic participation in the most important
social and economic issues facing the world today. Department
of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) Pacific will now begin to
implement the Global Classrooms Program.
On October 17 and 18, 2002, the
United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) will conduct a
two-day training on Kadena Air Base for DoDDS Pacific Model United
Nations (MUN) sponsors. The Far East MUN Coordinator and MUN sponsor
at Kadena High School stated, Two outstanding trainers whom
I met last summer when I went to the Model United Nations Summit
and Leadership Conference in New York City will be providing the
training to our MUN sponsors. The Far East MUN Coordinator
has been instrumental in ensuring a quality MUN program in the
Pacific Area. The MUN Global Leadership Opportunity Award is a
result of her ambitious work and collaboration with the DoDDS
Pacific Area. Because of her efforts, high school students
will not only be afforded the opportunity to improve their academic
performance, but they will learn skills that can be drawn upon
throughout their lifetime in the areas of research, public speaking,
conflict resolution, teamwork and leadership, commented
Dr. Steven Bloom, Deputy Director, DoDDS Pacific.
This exceptional opportunity
for sponsors, teachers, and students ties right in with our Community
Strategic Plan, Goal 1, Highest Student Achievement, stated
Dr. Nancy Bresell, Director, DoDDS Pacific. Her achievements
have made all of us in DoDDS Pacific very proud, Bresell
said.
