Advisory Council for Dependents Education (ACDE) visits Pacific schools.  During the week of April 28-May 1, 2008, ACDE teams will visit Korea, Japan, and Okinawa district schools.  The ACDE is comprised of representatives from education institutions and agencies, teachers’ unions, Unified military commands, and also includes parents of DoDDS students and one DoDDS student.  Following the school visits, teams will meet in Tokyo to review their observations of dependents’ education in the Pacific and make recommendations to the DoDEA Director.  Dr. Bresell will also deliver a 20-minute briefing to the ACDE team.  The briefing will cover such topics as organizational operations, student and sponsor demographics, the Community Strategic Plan, educational initiatives, test results and accountability, the budget, personnel, safety and security, transportation and information technology.

Top DoDDS Pacific Musicians Collaborate and Perform.  Along with their directors and chaperones, 200 DoDDS Pacific student musicians gathered at Yokota Air Base, Japan for four days of preparation and rehearsal in celebration of the 27th Annual Far East Honor Music Festival, April 21-25, 2008.  Both choral and band students auditioned for the festival by submitting recordings which were judged by a team of music educators.  The culminating concert was held at the Yokota Air Base Taiyo Community Center, Friday April 25, 2008.

DoDDS partners with military police in drug prevention program.  Back to back Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) training sessions will take place beginning in late April and early May.  From April 28 through May 7, DARE officers will become trained in the middle school curriculum.  DARE Officer Training is being conducted to certify potential DARE officers to deliver school curriculum to DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam students in School Year 2008-2009.  DARE is a substance abuse prevention education program designed to equip elementary school children with skills for resisting peer pressure to experiment with tobacco, alcohol, or drugs.

Annual Sorobon Competition Set for May 22.  It’s time to show that old technology can still set the pace in the modern world. On May 22, over 110 DoDDS students representing seven schools across the Kanto Plain will show their skills with the sorobon.  The competition will be held at the New Sanno Hotel. This device has been used for thousands of years to do mathematical computations. Based on the abacus which Romans used to solve problems, the sorobon is a Japanese adaptation of a Chinese device. In the competition, children solve progressively harder problems on their sorobon. The winners are able to add five digit numbers faster than most of us could do on an electronic calculator. This competition is just a small example of how DoDDS students interact with the host nation and demonstrate appreciation for its culture and history.

Congrats are in order for EJ King HS and Ms. Carola Cintron.  She received news that she has been accepted to Harvard University, class of 2012. Ms. Cintron is joining an elite group.  This year of the more than 27,000 students who applied, 93% were rejected.

Kadena Middle School places second in e-CYBERMISSION.  Team members Jonathan Pickens, Kenneth Tobisch, and Alexander Wilson won second place in their seventh grade division in Regional Competition of eCybermission, sponsored by the US Army.  eCYBERMISSION is a web-based science, math and technology competition for 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade teams. Teams propose solutions to real problems within their own communities and compete for regional and national awards.  eCYBERMISSION challenges students to explore how science, math, and technology work in our world. The team advisor was Mr. Jim Weaver.

Winners - 27th Anniversary - Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.  First place, Alex Kuster, Osan High School; second place, Kathrina Orozco, Guam High School; third place, Leslie Anne Stake, Osan High School.  Mr. Kuster, Miss Orozco, and Miss Stake will be traveling to the National Symposium where they will present their research projects.  They depart for Orlando, Florida on Monday, April 28, 2008.  Alex and Kathrina qualify to compete at the National Symposium for  scholarships ranging from $16,000 for first place to $2,000 for third.  If either should finish first in their presentation category, they will be eligible to attend the International Forum in London this summer with all expenses paid by National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

Michael Newman, Osan High School Student Selected to attend the Research Science Institute.  Michael Newman, a junior at Osan High School, will attend the 2008 Research Science Institute (RSI) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this summer. Michael is the recipient of a highly prized invitation from the Center for Excellence in Education to attend the twenty-fourth annual Research Science Institute held in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.  Michael is one of only fifty students from the United States chosen to attend this prestigious program which provides academic enrichment during the summer for top math and science students. Selection was based on the students’ outstanding standardized test scores, written essay responses, teacher recommendations and their potential for leadership in science and mathematics. Two students from DoDDS- Europe were also selected to attend.  They are Christine Ashton from Wiesbaden High School and Christopher Blake Wilson from Ankara High School.
