Advisory Council on Dependents’ Education (ACDE).  Members of the ACDE met in Arlington, Virginia , in September to review and discuss a number of educational initiatives. Attendees included: Deputy Under Secretary of Defense; Deputy Director, U.S. Pacific Command, Washington Liaison Office; USAF, Deputy J-1; and the Superintendent of San Diego County. Members of the council include senior leadership representatives from the military, state boards of education, teachers unions, and private industry to include Fortune 500 Corporations. Also attending were the Director, DoDEA, and Directors of DDESS, DoDDS Europe, and DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam. The ACDE meeting focused on important items from school accreditation visits to professional development, foreign language initiatives, and DoDEA testing and standards.  The ACDE advises the Secretary of Defense and the DoDEA Director on maintaining a quality education system. The next meeting is scheduled for May of 2006.

The DoDEA theme for SY 05-06 will again be “Math Matters.”  DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam proceeds with area-wide pre implementation of new math curriculum as materials continue to arrive in our schools. We will continue to provide instructional assistance for secondary mathematics students in the Algebra I and Geometry lab support classes, as well as the support class for 3 rd year mathematics which began last year.  Coming later in the school year will be the addition of the TI-84+ c alculator.  This new product has six times the number of application programs as the TI-83+ currently used in the schools.  These new applications, combined with our new curriculum, will facilitate and enrich explorations and activities used in today’s math classrooms.  The combination of content and technology provides a real world model for our students and enriches their experience.

DoDEA Implements New Record and Data Collection System.  DoDEA introduced Chancery Student Management Solutions (SMS) at the beginning of SY 05-06. SMS represents a major departure from the old system (Win-School) both in technology and design. With SMS we will have a generic database that is highly customizable. The end result will be a much better user experience which will enhance school functionality and improve access to data.  Although we have had challenges with the on-going implementation, we have made considerable progress.

DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam Principals Conference.  The theme for this years’ conference will be “Leadership Tools for Enhancing Programs and Practices in Literacy, Math and Science.”  Principals from all four districts, representing 45 schools throughout the Pacific, will attend the week long conference in Tokyo, November 13-18.  Welcoming remarks will be given by Dr. Joseph Tafoya, Director of DoDEA, and Dr. Elizabeth Middlemiss, Associate Director for Education and Principal Deputy Director for DoDEA.  Members from the Pacific Theater Education Council (PTEC) as well as teacher union representatives plan to attend. The conference is designed to enhance leadership skills and increase the knowledge of content standards in all three subjects. Principals will participate in several interactive sessions designed to increase their knowledge of inquiry instruction. Throughout the week, school leaders will have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of research that supports quality math, science and literacy instruction and acquire classroom observation skills that focus on best practices and program implementation.

Student Attends Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Isabel Chang , a senior at Seoul American High school , spent her summer working with a scientist in Massachusetts conducting research on birth defects. The program, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education and MIT, invites about 90 high school students from around the world to work with scientists, mathematicians and engineers to learn how science is used in business. Each year, two students are selected from DoDEA, one from the Pacific and one from Europe.

SAT – Pacific Class of 2005.  The SAT is the most widely taken college entrance exam in America. According to the College Board, the SAT is a measure of developed verbal and mathematical abilities important for success in c ollege.  It is interesting to note that while DoDEA probably has a larger than average population of students for whom English is not their first language, DoDEA scores on the verbal test remain relatively stronger than national averages. As a general rule, average SAT scores decrease as the participation rate increases. DoDEA’s scores are typical of states with similar levels of participation. Our students’ high participation rate demonstrates that they are serious about continuing their education.

Sure Start.  Through training, resources, and on-site program review, we are ensuring that our youngest learners have access to a strong developmentally appropriate preschool curriculum. Sure Start, modeled after Head Start, provides four year old children and their families support to ensure school success.  This fall Sure Start teachers received specific training in how children develop mathematical thinking. Teachers learned instructional strategies to help students meet the DoDEA Pre K Foundational Standards in Mathematics.
