The 86th Annual American Education Week (AEW) will be observed from November 11–17, 2007. This year’s theme, “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility,” highlights the importance of bringing together educators, school staff, parents, students, and communities in a unified effort to build great schools.
For over 60 years the Department of Defense Dependents Schools have maintained the highest standards for academic achievement in education. DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam is recognized and respected as a leader with a proven track record of superior results both inside and outside the classroom. All of our achievements can be directly linked to the most important ingredient in the formula for success of a student - our classroom teachers.
One of the most critical aspects of life for any individual is education and its power to open doors for people.
A Chinese proverb says that, "Learning is a treasure that follows its owner everywhere." The mission of our schools is to provide children with a quality education. Yet, there is a richer agenda in schools today that goes beyond the core basics and electives that we offer. There is a higher purpose that requires educators, with the help of parents and community members, to assist students discover the personal power of learning as they ponder the connection learning has with life and the goals, hopes, dreams, and aspirations they have set for themselves.
As I visit schools and meet with teachers and students, it is obvious that the schools in the Pacific embrace the responsibility and commitment set forth in this year’s American Education Week Theme. Our teachers and administrators take pride in their efforts to ensure that all children are provided equal access to a quality education. As educators you take the responsibility for educating youth seriously and it shows in the success our students have within the school setting and in the myriad co-curricular activities that are offered.
Let us never forget the responsibility we have for educating the youth of today who will be the leaders of tomorrow.
