A Message from the Director: In Remembrance

Just four years ago, we witnessed a horrific crime in which so many innocent people perished in the worst terrorist act – the worst act of war – our country has ever seen.  At this time of the year we pause to reflect on those lives lost and once again renew our commitment to preserving their memories.

As we embrace the freedoms and liberties that make the United States the beacon of hope, peace and stability throughout the world, let us never forget how fragile life is.  The tragedy of September 11 brought us together in a new age of commitment and honor that inspired us to rededicate ourselves to defend democracy. We all have a contribution to make to this commitment that is shared by millions of people across the United States and the world.  Our courageous soldiers make their contribution to freedom on the battlefield, on the seas, and in the skies.  For DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam, our contribution is to ensure that the children of the U.S. Military community receive the finest education possible.  We take pride in protecting and developing our nation's greatest resource:  its children.  It is in the innocence, creativity, and spirit of our students that we see the true promise of America's liberty and freedom.

On September 16 our country will observe National POW/MIA Recognition Day.  On this day, the nation pauses to reflect on the heroism of tens of thousands of Americans who endured the hardship of enemy confinement, and those whose fate in time of war still remains unknown.  Today, over 90,000 of our fellow citizens are missing in action from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and now the war against terrorism.

On September 11 and September 16 we remember these citizens and warriors – gone – but never forgotten. It is with deep respect and solemn appreciation that we honor those who paid the ultimate price. We will not forget their courage and devotion to duty, honor, and country.

It is fitting that our lasting tribute to these Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice, is that we never forget. In many of our schools we will again remember the tragic events of four years ago, the soldiers that have fallen and those still missing, by participating in special ceremonies. These activities, in honor of those supporting the ongoing fight against terrorism around the world, will be marked with singing, patriotic readings, and the presentation of colors.

Please join me in observing a moment of silence during this week to remember those innocent people who died, those who remain missing, and the more than 1,860 US soldiers who have been killed or wounded in Iraq.
