I would like to take this opportunity, when all America joins together in appreciation of our Nation’s teachers, to recognize the great work of our own educators. Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-8, 2005, gives us an opportunity to thank our DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam teachers for their dedicated service and tireless contributions in teaching our children.
Most of us can remember a favorite teacher who had a significant impact on our lives. Our memories vividly remind us of a person who believed in us when no one else did, someone who peaked our interest in new ideas, and someone who inspired us. Can you recall a favorite teacher that you wish to especially thank? I can.
DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam schools have recently been in the lime light due to the quality educational opportunities we provide our students. It is through the creative talents of our teachers that our educational programs are recognized as some of the finest in the United States. Individuals who will lead our country; develop new technologies to improve our quality of life; and find answers to our most puzzling health, social, and political issues are the students that we educate today. The cliché “the future is in our hands” has a special meaning for those of us who see first hand the difference a teacher can make in the life of a student, as well as the larger impact a school can have on its community members.
To all of our DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam teachers, thank you for your continued loyalty to our students and schools, and especially to the military community we serve. I am proud to serve as your director and humbled to work with such fine educators who are inspirational role models for our future citizens.
