A Message from the Director: Disability Employment Awareness Month 2004
|
October marks Disability Employment Awareness Month, a federally recognized designation that calls attention to the challenges and issues faced by people with disabilities, particularly in employment. This is an important program in promoting freedom, independence, and dignity for millions of people.
DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam proudly joins our Nation in celebrating this important month long program. This year's theme, "You're Hired! Success Knows No Limitations!" emphasizes one of the federal government's top priorities - improved economic prospects by providing employment opportunities that maximize an individual's potential.
DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam is striving to ensure that no one is denied access to employment, education, cultural activities, or community life because of a disability. Every day we witness the incredible talent, dedication and commitment people with disabilities have and the challenges they face in their personal and professional lives. We commend them in their accomplishments and will continue to build on the successes of our past and hold fast to the promise and potential of every employee within the DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam family.
We are particularly proud of the many improvements that are taking place for students with disabilities who attend our schools. Through the Special Education Initiative, we have the charge to continue to improve and refine the educational opportunities we provide students with disabilities. It is our goal that through quality educational experiences, our students with disabilities will graduate as skillful employees and serve as productive members of our communities. This goal is in support of the DoDEA Mission Statement, which states that DoDEA provides, ". exemplary educational programs that inspire and prepare all students for success in a global environment."
Today, individuals with disabilities are better able to develop meaningful skills, engage in productive work, and participate fully in society; however, there is still much to be accomplished to dissolve both physical barriers and false perceptions. I encourage you to take advantage of the many educational opportunities and to get involved in this annual program through assemblies, classroom lessons, and special events.
Nancy
