A Message from the Director, DoDDS Pacific
Hispanic Heritage Month

I am delighted to have DoDDS Pacific join the U. S. Military Community in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 - October 15, 2003. During this time, we pause to observe and celebrate the growth and achievements of Hispanic Americans to this great Nation.

Hispanic Americans have played an integral part in our country’s exceptional story of success. Perhaps no single ethnic group has had as profound an impact upon our Nation as Hispanic Americans. Twenty-four years before the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, the League of United Latin American Citizens filed class action suits on behalf of Hispanic children who were victims of discrimination in public schools. From the days of the first explorers in what is now Florida, Texas, and California, the Hispanic people have played a significant role in cultivating this vast country and developing its abundant resources. From the American Revolution to today’s voluntary service, over 2 million Hispanic veterans have served our country with honor and courage. Hispanic Americans continue to answer the call of duty each and every time our Nation stands to defend itself or its interests.

Today, Hispanic Americans continue to be leaders and pioneers -- in education, government, business, science, sports, and the arts. From the bravery demonstrated by Luisa Capetillo and Lucia Gonzalez Parson, who fought with Susan B. Anthony to secure a woman’s right to vote, to the works of Representative Ruben Hinojosa in Congress, every day, in communities across the United States, Hispanic Americans remind their fellow Americans of their purpose and task, as well as the importance of faith and devotion to one's country. From labor to homeland security, from the theater to the sport pages, from the White House to the classroom, Hispanics are a significant part of everyday life in the United States and beyond. The values of the Hispanic American community are values vital to the American experience, and our Nation is stronger because Hispanic individuals have recognized the importance of caring for each other, obtaining a good education, and exercising one's rights as a citizen of these United States.

This month provides a wonderful opportunity for all of us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the beliefs that unite us. I encourage all employees to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month with appropriate observances and events.
