A Message
from the Director, DoDDS Pacific
|
This week I want to highlight
the important role technology plays in the education of our
children. Our Information Technology (IT) Division is responsible
for the implementation of technology literacy, which is comprised
of DoDEA's five C's: computers, curriculum, competency, connectivity
and corporate. In essence, the five C's provide all students
and teachers with access to modern multimedia computers, connect
every classroom to the Internet, provide all teachers with
training needed to help students learn through the use of
technology, offer educationally effective computer courseware
for all subjects, and make available management information
systems that will improve the decision-making process and
deliver resources more efficiently to the learner.
Over 84 percent of the technology
budget was spent on computers, curriculum, competency, and
connectivity. These areas directly impact childrens
learning. Approximately 2700 new Pentium desktop systems,
standard software resource kits, and 100 network printers
will be installed this school year. With a goal of 2:1, the
DoDDS Pacific student-to-computer ratio is projected to be
2.4:1 this school year. The national average is 6:1, making
us a technology leader among our nation's school systems.
Due to the increase in school computers, over $2.1 million
supported electrical upgrades in three districts.
In partnership with the IT Division,
educational programs and professional development activities
were hosted by the Education Division. Four Far East Technology
Conferences (FETCs) provided training for selected elementary
and secondary teachers and all computer specialists (ETs).
Training focused on lesson design practice for standards based
lessons, development of student-centered activities supported
by technology, and assessment of students' technology skills.
School webmasters were given training on web site management.
We have implemented Computer Service Support classes at the
high school level to prepare students to build, maintain,
and troubleshoot computers and other hardware. At identified
schools, we also offer students a Cisco Networking Academy
course, which culminates in a network certificate and gives
them valuable skills for future employment in the computer
field.
The Education Division has developed
and funded a $315,000 Pacific Educational Technology Project.
For 15 classrooms this project will integrate notebook computers,
"Palm Pilot" hand-held computers, and "AlphaSmart"
computer companions into instruction. Students and teachers
will have dedicated access to this technology and will be
able to explore new ways of learning.
By working closely together
and focusing on the Community Strategic Plan, the Education
and Information Technology Divisions have developed a model
educational technology program that enhances learning and
will prepare our students for the future.
