2002 Principals' Conference |
About 100
principals and guests attended the annual Department of Defense
Dependents Schools (DoDDS) Pacific Principals Conference in Tokyo, Japan, November 1822, 2002. This conference,
entitled Leading LearningLiteracy at the Center, is
the cornerstone for DoDDS Pacific activities that will be implemented
under the 20012006
Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Community Strategic
Plan (CSP).
The conference focused on literacy in a standards-based school. Participants developed a clear understanding of the research-based practices and skills that promote literacy, as well as an understanding of how a standards-based curriculum can improve student achievement and enhance skill. |
|
While
test results indicate DoDDS Pacific students read and write
very well, DoDDS Pacific believes that students must understand
that reading is not only a passport to an infinite variety of experiences
within the classroom but opens the door to opportunities outside
of school that contribute to an active, successful life. |
The conference
included addresses from Dr. Joseph Tafoya, DoDEA Director; Ms. Shiela
Crump Waskow, Yokota AB, Japan; Col Thomas J. Gibbons, US PACOM
J11; and RADM George E. Voelker, USN, Commander, Naval Recruiting
Command. Guests included the Pacific
Theater Education Council, military education liaisons within
the Pacific, and presidents of the Pacific Federal Education Association.
