2001 Pupil Personnel Services Conference |
|
Elementary
and secondary Pupil Personnel Services conferences, titled Meeting
the Challenge, were held at the
New Sanno Hotel in Tokyo, Japan, for more than 150 participants
and
guests. The conferences were structured in three strands to meet
the special needs of Department of Defense Dependents Schools
(DoDDS) Pacific school nurses, counselors, and psychologists.
|
Nurses worked with the new database health management system, which provides them with increased capacity to meet the students health needs. In addition, nurses reviewed the new health curriculum to learn how they can provide educational services in support of the curriculum standards. Conference topics included immunizations, asthma care, allergies, automated electronic defibrillator, eating disorders, hearing loss, smoking cessation, and practical communications.
|
|
High school counselors heard from stateside consultants about college planning including applications and admissions, financial aid, parent information nights, communicating with students and parents, and writing a successful scholarship application. Counselors also reviewed specifics such as writing recommendations for students and guiding students on writing a personal essay.
|
|
School
psychologists worked with colleagues in areas of crisis
intervention, management and communication. They engaged
in role playing scenarios and learned about non-violent
crisis prevention.
Elementary
and middle school counselors focused on special programs
dealing with bullying, harassment, empathy, impulse control,
anger management and conflict resolution.
All participants attended sessions related to the attack on America and best practices for helping children cope with the tragedy of September 11th.
