During the first week of September 2003, Yokota Air Base was the training site for DoDDS Pacific early childhood teachers and paraprofessionals.

The DoDDS Pacific Elementary Education Specialists along with nationally recognized early literacy consultant, Ms. Nancy Perry, provided training in such areas as standards-based instruction and literacy. They introduced specific strategies in promoting literacy for young children. Working in teams, teachers and paraprofessionals were able to review current research, discuss options and design learning plans within early childhood educational programs. An in-depth review of the New Sure Start Manual with opportunities for discussion and questions concluded the sessions.
