Leading Learning Bulletin
Bulletin #1

Welcome to the Leading Learning Bulletin

Leading Learning is the title of the new standards-based leadership development program developed in the Pacific. Leading Learning is designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills necessary for administrators and teachers to become change agents in our schools and to lead the way for standard based reform. The purpose of the Leading Learning Bulletin is to keep Pacific assistant principals, principals, and superintendents actively engaged in the Leading Learning process.

It is our intent to provide you with updates and information regularly through these bulletins. The bulletins will be distributed electronically via the Director’s Weekly Distribution Package. Please feel free to share these documents with educators in your schools and offices. Additionally, you are invited to send comments, suggestions and ideas for publication in future bulletins. It is our hope that the bulletin will become a catalyst for professional discussion for all Pacific school leaders.

Next Steps
In October 2002, all DoDDS Pacific administrators had the opportunity to meet in small learning communities to discuss their first round of focused observations. The intent of these interactions were to analyze the data they had gathered, look for trends and make suggestion for the focus of future classroom visits. During the sessions, participants provided information and suggestions for establishing study groups and how to transition toward the development of a learning environment using distributed leadership for professional growth.

Research clearly indicates that when teachers and administrators regularly engage in dialogue about the study of instructional practice, there is a positive impact on the quality of instruction. By establishing a culture of shared responsibility for professional growth, teachers and administrators make giant steps toward breaking down the traditional tendency of teachers working in isolation. The DoDDS Pacific Education Division staff looks forward to working on these next steps with you.

Classroom Observations
As a reminder, the focus of the first series of observations are provided to you at each district administrators’ conference. As we lead our schools toward a standards-based teaching environment, we need to become more familiar with what standards based teaching looks like. Observations are to focus on the following questions:

1.
What standards are the lesson addressing?
2.
How is the learning activity contributing to student learning?
3.
What evidence is observed to demonstrate that all students meet the standard?

Administrators are requested to collect data on these questions, in accordance with procedures established in your districts. Please be prepared to share your data and discuss your findings with your colleagues.

Coming Soon:  Data-informed Decision Making—learning modules designed to help school leaders better understand the use of data.
