DoDEA Sure Start is a preschool program specifically designed for children who might be considered "at risk" for establishing a firm foundation for future educational success. Like the Head Start model on which it is based, Sure Start is dedicated to providing extended services in the areas of education, health, social services, and family involvement. Quality indicators of the Sure Start Program include a full day program (5-6 hours); medical, dental, and developmental screenings; nutritious snacks and lunches; appropriate curriculum standards; and active family involvement. Through its comprehensive approach to meeting the whole needs of children and families, Sure Start is based on the belief that "risk is not destiny." With a Sure Start, children can develop the educational and social competence needed for productive, lifelong learning.
