| Mathematics |
DODEA offers a comprehensive pre-kindergarten through 12th grade mathematics program. It is centered on students learning and the ability to think and reason mathematically. Curriculum standards, effective instructional strategies, and ongoing assessment of student progress are essential components of the mathematics program. The major goal of the Department of Deference Education Activity mathematics program is to offer a balanced curriculum including problem solving, conceptual development, and basic skills organized by the following strands:
Number and operations concepts
Geometry and measurement concepts |
Function, pattern, and algebra concepts |
Statistics and probability concepts |
Problem solving and mathematical reasoning |
Mathematical skills and tools |
Mathematical communications |

Putting mathematics to work |
The elementary mathematics program emphasizes problem solving skills and communicating mathematically. The goal is for children to develop their ability to reason through problem situations; apply previously learned or new strategies to solve the problem; demonstrate perseverance and confidence; and communicate their thinking and reasoning about the problem with others. Teachers use multiple resources to address the DODEA mathematics standards, including the Mathematics Curriculum Guides, adopted curriculum materials, electronic resources, and math literature.
We believe that algebra is an important component in building a foundation for success in life. Therefore, at the high school level, all students must earn three credits in rigorous math courses for graduation. All graduates are required to earn a credit in Algebra I, a credit in geometry, and one additional credit in a higher math class. Because we believe that all students should study and understand algebra and geometry, DODEA has algebra and geometry lab courses, which provide the opportunity for further development of algebraic thinking and algebraic and geometric concepts. Although these courses do not offer math credit, they do help ensure that all students can be successful in their study of rigorous, higher-level mathematics courses.
The Secondary
Math Courses document provides additional information.
