| League for Soroban Education |
 |
Two
Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS)
Pacific districts have embraced partnerships
with the League
for Soroban Education.
The
partnership for the League for Soroban Education
and DoDDS
Japan District is in its 21st year. Each
spring, the Kanto Plain Soroban contest is
held in Tokyo, Japan, and brings 100 elementary
students in grades three through six together
to perform calculations with all students from
local host nation schools. DoDDS Japan schools
participating in this yearly activity include:
Ikego, Sullivans, Byrd, Lanham, Arnn, Yokota
East, and Yokota West. |
|
The
League for Soroban Education invited DoDDS
Okinawa students to participate in the Association's
Okinawa Soroban Competition beginning in 2000.
Schools participating included Amelia Earhart
Intermediate School, Bob Hope Primary School,
and Kadena, Killin, Kinser, and Stearley Heights
Elementary Schools.
Students
test their computing skills and demonstrate
proficiency in use of the soroban. Students
study soroban as part of the Japanese culture
curriculum in DoDDS culture classes. Soroban
helps children develop an active approach to
learning and greatly increases their power
of mental calculations. The development of logical
thought processes and powers of concentrations
are also beneficial byproducts of soroban study. The soroban or abacus, as we know it today, has a long history dating from circa 1200 A.D. in China. |
